@ Pranav Pandya - Sure can try putting these thoughts in to a PPT format. Need some time to work on it but promise it will be there in the near future.

Abhishek you can say it twice over for me. I completely agree with his comments. Infact for the first time such clarity is being read by me on the said topic or may be alternatively I have not come across a clearer article on the said topic till date. Vishal is it possible to put your thoughts in ppt bearing few slides describing the said topic in a lucid fashion such that many of the public sector personnel as per my perception would be able to comprehend the topic better in ppt format. It will thus help in spreading awareness among the public secor community towards giving priority to interoperability, scalability, security patches, etc simillar topics being handeled by a proprietary software adhering to open standards rather than adopting opensource version with no such assurance and legal indeminty towards future technical longitivty oriented roadmap outlined.

Nice insightful article Vishalbhai. Honestly I understood the exact difference between open source and open standard today. So far I was having some vague idea about the same. Keep writing good stuff like this and keep spreading the knowledge.

Hi Alain, thanks for the in-depth comments on the topic. You are absolutely right. Microsoft has been taking a beating since long over this, especially in the public sector. One area that needs to be looked in to is that most documents in the public or private sector are currently stored in formats of doc, xls, etc and not OpenDocument Format (ODF). How are these going to be converted on a large scale?

I've tried a few checks by creating a document in MS Office 2007 - which has incorporated the OOXML standard - and then opened and saved this in OpenOffice (ODF format). It gives out thousands of errors.

Many websites have thrased Microsoft on the adoption/promotion of OOXML, but if this standard meets the market needs better, why should it not be adopted?

Would like to share a link which I keep an eye on: http://www.durusau.net/

Vishal,
I think that your question is the good one, and that your arguments are rights!

Just to let you know about my background before answering to your question : I've been working 10 to 12 years with Sun Microsystems (the open standard supporter), and I'm the co-founder of a software vendor, Jalios, a portal/ECM/ESN ISV(closed-source, supporting open (useful) standards!

I believe (but I can explain why) that it's better that your software supports open standards (closed source, available thru escrow service, just in case) than be open source... ( except maybe if it's a community-based open source (FSF, Apache, Mozilla? ...).

Indeed, as a user, I don't care about the source code (only if my vendor goes chapter 11). This is because, I would be unable to understand/modify the code that I would't have developed, but I do care about open standards because I would be able to integrate the application within my IT with the other applications.

What I also do care about is administration, innovation, ease of use, scalability, support, roadmap, security... and I do believe that I have more chance to find it working with a closed-source application vendor (more revenue) than working with a (commercial) open source vendor.

Best Regards
